The Nun

In The Conjuring 2 Valak served as a side antagonist who Lorraine battled while helping a family with a cursed home. In that film Valak added another creepy element to an already strange narrative, but here she is sapped of much of her power.

The Bye Bye Man

The villain’s motivations and lore are never truly covered by the film. The only thing we know is how he can get in your head and how his evil spreads. I don’t need to know every single thing about a horror movie antagonist, but there’s no mention of what he is, who he is, or why he does what he does.

Pet Sematary

No disrespect to Jeté Laurence who plays Ellie, as she is a child who is early in her career, but her undead performance was laughable. By that I mean I, and everyone in the theater, started laughing as soon as she started talking.

Happy Death Day

While I enjoyed the puzzle aspect of the film, I would not say that it is at all scary, gory, or weird. It’s barely horror. It’s a PG-13 film that works more as a mystery thriller, that pays homage to Groundhog Day and Sixteen Candles, than it is a slasher film.

Mandy

Okay, let’s address the elephant in the room, shall we: Yes, Nick Cage does have many amazing Nick Cage high level freakouts, and they had me belly laughing in the theater. I’m talking blood, drugs, fire, decapitation, gore, the works!

Intruders

This concept is automatically interesting and is in line with a burgeoning trend in horror filmmaking. Much like last year’s Don’t Breathe, this is a story that starts with the victimization of a helpless individual, but the narrative swings around quickly when their true identity is revealed.

The Conjuring 2

Unlike the first film, which ingratiated itself to us not only because it shares a history with The Amityville Horror, but because its production takes influence from films like The Exorcist and The Omen. This film tries to say, “Believe us. There’s something to fear.”

Yoga Hosers

Kevin Smith seems to be in a weird place right now. Though I would like to use the bulk of this review to chastise him, in equal strides I would like to ask if he is okay. Are you okay, Kevin Smith?

Holidays

Using a celebratory holiday as the background for your horror film isn’t a new technique. The most popular slasher film of all time is “Halloween,” complete with trick or treaters and the teenaged screams of Jamie Lee Curtis.

Unfriended

The source of their misery is an old video one of them posted a year ago, which led to a friend's suicide. The supposed ghost of that girl haunts them and kills them throughout the film. Thinking that there was a possible villain attached to this myth, and they were somehow getting into these people's homes and computers, I thought this was an interesting concept.

iZombie

The show pays homage to its graphic roots by having drawn panels at the beginning of each section of the show, and there are puns galore (probably why it reminds me of Buffy). This show builds its tension really well, has really dramatic character transformations throughout the show’s first season, has really interesting mysteries, and is another great installment in the world of female driven television shows
