The Babysitter

This review is for all the people who were burned by Jennifer’s Body: I know you’re scared to trust again. Maybe you thought it would be more like Juno, but full of lesbian scenes, and instead it was weird and exploitative. I know you aren’t ready to come back into the fold.

Blue Jay

This film is written by and starring Mark Duplass in one of his most devastatingly raw performances to date. Sarah Paulson co-stars in an equally amazing capacity, and the director is newcomer (and former cameraman) Alex Lehmann. Small in scope, but brutally honest about the depth of young love, this is a film that deserves all the adoration it has gotten.

The Conjuring 2

Unlike the first film, which ingratiated itself to us not only because it shares a history with The Amityville Horror, but because its production takes influence from films like The Exorcist and The Omen. This film tries to say, “Believe us. There’s something to fear.”

Pee-Wee's Big Holiday

Well, yes and no. There is something decidedly Pee-wee Herman about this film. It's an odd duck among all the other surreal and cartoonish films of the past ten years. Most of the time it's simply weird to the point of confusion and anger, but then there are these cut scenes with Joe Manganiello that make you burst out in pointed, uncomfortable laughter.

Beyond Clueless

While not every point is completely fleshed out throughout the film, each case study serves the overall thread of the film, which is to show that teen films exist because of a societal need. Teenagers are the most disregarded, misunderstood group in our society. They themselves can't fully explain, or understand the range of emotions that they go through.
