Brooklyn

Adding the scenic location of coastal Ireland, and the allure of fifties costuming, “Brooklyn,” is mostly about trying to be happy, no matter what the cost. Our main character, Eilis, learns this lesson through the world expanding procedure of falling in love.

The Danish Girl

Other issues with the film include that the entire novel that the film is based around is fictional, meaning it is not researched. Many things about the plot, ages of those in it, and the details of Gerda and Lili’s relationship are completely false.

Carol

The dissent surrounding the Academy Awards this year was not only directed towards a lack of minority nominees. The film caused uproar concerning the lack of nominations for Best Picture and Best Director.

Room

Mostly set in a single room, the story follows a young mother and her son (who only knows the inside of a room). His mother teaches him about the outside world and the horrifying circumstances that have led to the pair’s current fate.

The Martian

When I originally tried to see this film in theaters, back in September, it was always sold out hours ahead of time. People flocked to see this film for its heightened thrill, the hard sci-fi elements, and Matt Damon’s great performance.

The Big Short

He made his company millions of dollars, but also benefitted from the downfall of the American economy and the degradation of the nation in general. Others, learning of Burry’s findings, also tried to cash in on the possibility of a crisis and made millions.

Julianne Moore was the easy choice for Best Actress at this year’s awards. An old Hollywood pro, Moore had previously been nominated a whopping four times, one year in two different acting categories.

Wild

Most of the film is set in the wilderness, where Cheryl battles sexual predators, rain, hunger, and herself. There are also numerous flashbacks to her life before the PCT. Laura Dern was given a Best Supporting Actress nomination for this film, and she shines through the murkiness and somber setting.

Inherent Vice

The performances are solid; undebatable. Joaquin Phoenix does wonders as the pot smoking, almost vagrant detective “Doc.” Since coming back to the world of the living after his stunt with Casey Affleck, Phoenix has taken on complex, ethos pondering, crooked characters, that both entertain with their density, and enrage many with their brilliance.

Into the Woods

The songs are amazing, melding seamlessly with the story, and they also punch up the action. If you take anything good from this film, it’s that you get a great soundtrack and a view into the original West End production.
